It was December 2010 when The Unthanks staged a concert that was at once both fun and their most daunting project yet. Over two sold out nights at the Union Chapel, London, their exploration of music by Antony & the Johnsons and Robert Wyatt was an irreverent joy, making the Independent's Gigs of the Year list. Those London shows are now captured on a live album, and to mark it's release. The album is the first volume in what will be a series of Unthank albums called Diversions. The series is designed to capture and document a prolific twelve months which has been full of unique projects for the Mercury nominated Tynesiders.

Tracks:
1.1 Bird Gerhl
1.2 Man Is the Baby
1.3 You Are My Sister
1.4 For Today I Am a Boy
1.5 Paddy's Gone
1.6 Spiralling
1.7 Stay Tuned
1.8 Dondestan
1.9 Lullaby for Hamza
1.10 Lisp Service
1.11 Free Will and Testament
1.12 Out of the Blue
1.13 Cuckoo Madame
1.14 Sea Song
1.15 Forest (Excerpt)
Title: Diversions 4: Songs And Poems Of Molly Drake
Artist: The Unthanks
Label: Cadiz Recording Co.
Product Type: VINYL LP
UPC: 844493092810
Genre: Folk
Release Date: 2017-07-07
Number of Discs: 1

A wistful mother in the 1950s makes some simple home recordings in her family sitting room. Little could she have known that decades later, her son would become one of the most poetic and influential songwriters ever, or that more than sixty years later, the dust would be blown off her own songs. On the surface, the 2013 release of Molly Drake's work could easily have been perceived as just a curious footnote and jigsaw piece in explaining the enormous talent of Nick Drake. In the eyes of The Unthanks however, and increasingly amongst others, Molly's work is extraordinary enough to rank alongside and independently of her brilliant son. With encouragement from the Drake musical estate and the full blessing and enthusiasm of celebrated actress Gabrielle Drake (Molly's daughter and Nick's sister) The Unthanks are relishing the opportunity and will treat the challenge with the same love and diligence for their subject as they did when reinterpreting the work of Robert Wyatt and Antony & The Johnson's on Diversions Vol 1. Never intended for public release, Molly Drake's recordings, made by her husband, were made at home and are of the time. In a climate where films, stories and music are being rehashed for spurious repeat exploitation, if ever a body of work actually merited reappraisal and fresh presentation, surely the work of Molly Drake is it. Her songs share plenty of common ground with her son's - charming and bittersweet, yet dark and pensive. With most pieces drifting into the next, In Winter is a dream-like winter fantasia, embracing both the dark and the light in the most ritualistic of seasons. Moving in and out of focus, like a memory, it's a bittersweet hymnal to our shared winter experience. This is the band's sixteenth album but a world in itself, capturing the warmth and nostalgia of the festive season, the chill and darkness of the winter months, and the reflective ritualisms of the turn of the year; the end and beginning of the circle of life. In typical magpie style, The Unthanks collect and reimagine with deep musical intelligence, at once unique and familiar, inventive but natural and effortless. You will hear what a Tyneside band playing a German Christmas song in the style of The Beach Boys sounds like (O Tannenbaum); a Spanish carol performed by English folkies through the filter of Tom Waits (Carol Of The Birds); a French carol given desert blues menace, a newly written tribute to the NHS to the tune of O Holy Night (Nurse Emmanuel); an opening piece inspired by A Ceremony of Carols by Benjamin Britten (In Winter's Night); traditional wassails and old stories colored with folk noir and traces of Vincent Guaraldi's Merry Christmas Charlie Brown.

Tracks:
1.1 In Winter's Night
1.2 O Tannenbaum
1.3 Dark December
1.4 Gower Wassail
1.5 The Holly and the Ivy
1.6 O Come All Ye Faithful
1.7 Carol of the Birds
1.8 Carol of the Beasts
1.9 The Cherry Tree Carol
1.10 Bleary Winter
2.1 In the Bleak Midwinter
2.2 The Snow It Melts the Soonest
2.3 God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
2.4 Coventry Carol
2.5 River River
2.6 Nurse Emmanuel
2.7 Tar Barrel in Dale
2.8 Greatham
2.9 Dear Companions
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1033/0151/3561/files/4387880-3293157_23562044-195f-4a3f-aea0-6fa693e34c9d.jpg?v=1788058543
the-unthanks-sorrows-away-ltd-cd-a5-book-edition
The Unthanks: Sorrows Away - Ltd CD A5 Book Edition - COMPACT DISCS
Title: Sorrows Away - Ltd CD A5 Book Edition
Artist: The Unthanks
Label: Rabble Rouser
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 844493092995
Genre: Folk
Release Date: 2022-10-21
Number of Discs: 1
Additional Details: UNITED KINGDOM - IMPORT, LIMITED EDITION

Limited edition CD Book edition. Beautifully presented, it features 24 pages of lyrics, song notes, artwork and photos, bound in an A5 square (210x210mm) cover. Perhaps you heard. The most important and best loved British folk group in the last 20 years have been on the road since April 2022 showcasing Sorrows Away. The anticipation for the delayed record release is all the greater, after nights like the London Palladium show, which climaxed with a mass sing. On many other nights too, in Edinburgh and Dublin, Newcastle and Nottingham, sold out audiences already on their feet for a standing ovation, would sing the album title, sonorously, defiantly, again and again, while the band presided silently, with wide smiles and the odd tear, before rejoining in chorus for one last time. On the one hand, it shows that a band who have been making us cry for nearly 20 years, have done the unthinkable and made some music of joy and light! Inviting us after two years of Brexit, Covid and no live music to banish our 'sorrows away', The Unthanks have turned two simple words into a prayer - a cathartic incantation to sing at the top of our voices, from the depths of our souls - SORROWS AWAY! - sending us home feeling like we have seen off the past, welcomed in the new and reconnected with one another. Sorrows Away is perhaps the most complete Unthanks album to date, showing greater contrasts between light and dark, joy and sorrow, intimate and epic, bitter and sweet. There is also archetypal Unthanks territory - rich, tender, exploratory and long-form.

Tracks:
1.1 The Great Silkie of Sule Skerry
1.2 The Sandgate Dandling Song
1.3 The Old News
1.4 The Royal Blackbird
1.5 The Isabella Colliery Coke Ovens
1.6 The Bay of Fundy
1.7 The Month of January (Uncle Rat)
1.8 My Singing Bird
1.9 Waters of Tyne
1.10 Sorrows Away (Love Is Kind)
Title: Sorrows Away
Artist: The Unthanks
Label: Rabble Rouser
Product Type: VINYL LP
UPC: 844493093008
Genre: Folk
Release Date: 2022-10-21
Number of Discs: 1
Additional Details: UNITED KINGDOM - IMPORT

Perhaps you heard. The Lines in Part One-Lillian Bilocca, a campaigner for fishermen's rights, were written by actor Maxine Peake and turned into song by Adrian McNally; The Lines in Part Two-World War One were originally written in 2014 for a project marking the opening year of the World War One centenary. The Unthanks decided to record and release them in this, the final year; The Lines in Part Three-Emily Bronte, feature a collection of Emily Brontë poems, turned into songs by Yorkshire-born Unthanks pianist and composer Adrian McNally and played on Emily's own piano in the Parsonage in Haworth where she lived and worked. This special slip-cased 3cd set contains all three volumes, performed by Rachel & Becky Unthank (voice), Adrian McNally (piano, voice) along with guests Niopha Keegan (violin, harmonium, voice; Chris Price (bass, lap steel, voice); Martin Douglas (drums); Sam Lee & Tim Dalling (voice); Ben Lee, Chrissie Slater, Gemma Kost (strings).

Tracks:
1.1 Lillian (Prelude)
1.2 A Whistling Woman
1.3 The Sea Is a Woman
1.4 Lonesome Cowboy
1.5 Lillian II (The Banqueting Hall Scene)
2.1 Roland and Vera
2.2 Everyone Sang
2.3 War Film
2.4 Breakfast
2.5 Suicide in the Trenches
2.6 Socks
3.1 The Parsonage
3.2 Shall Earth No More Inspire Thee
3.3 High Waving Heather
3.4 She Dried Her Tears and They Did Smile
3.5 The Night Is Darkening Around Me
3.6 Deep Deep Down in the Silent Grave
3.7 Lines
3.8 Remembrance
3.9 O Evening Why
3.10 I'm Happiest When Most Away
Title: Diversions 4: Songs And Poems Of Molly Drake
Artist: The Unthanks
Label: Rabble Rouser Recs
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 844493092797

Title: Last
Artist: The Unthanks
Label: Rabble Rouser
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 844493093084
Genre: Folk
Release Date: 2023-09-22
Number of Discs: 1
Additional Details: UNITED KINGDOM - IMPORT

Originally released and licensed to EMI in 2011, Last is now reissued on RabbleRouser Music. Originally released in 2012, it was one of the Mail On Sunday's albums of the year. Diversions Vol. 3 contains the music created by The Unthanks for the Tyneside Cinema commissioned film of the same name, Songs from the Shipyards - a beautiful and moving film, tracing the story of shipbuilding and is a studio album that documents a non-sequential 'best of' the live soundtrack. This exquisitely realised record is so heavy with a sense of time and place that one might be on the docks. Sorrowful and magical, a riveting, rigorously unsentimental yet deeply moving experience. The Unthanks are never better than when singing about dignity in the face of adversity. Every crushed knuckle and slide down a slipway is elegantly evoked.

Title: Lines Parts One Two And Three
Artist: The Unthanks
Label: Cadiz Music
Product Type: VINYL LP
UPC: 844493092926
Genre: Folk
Release Date: 2019-03-08
Number of Discs: 3
Additional Details: 10-INCH VINYL

Lines is a trilogy of song cycles, with very different subjects but each inspired by poetry and focused on a different female perspective. Even though McNally has scored symphony scale arrangements for The Unthanks, all three are musically untrained, and put their collective musical vocabulary down to the music they grew up listening to, rather than playing, for which both McNally and the Unthank sisters have parents to thank. Using the traditional and folk music of the North East of England as a starting point, the influence of Steve Reich, Miles Davis, Sufjan Stevens, Robert Wyatt, Antony & the Johnsons, King Crimson and Tom Waits can be heard in theband's 7 albums to date. Mount the Air is the work of an act who still believe whole heartedly in the valueof the album as an art form. On very limited resources and makeshift facilities, they have shown extraordinary commitment and devotion to that art-form, to create their finest work yet.
