The band had planned on recording their song 'TV Set,' as an A side, along with another track or tracks. Mr. Chilton told them the way he liked to work was to have a band record a lot of songs and from that they would pick the best of the bunch. Luckily for Cramps fans everywhere, the band did just that. The first evidence of these sessions was unleashed upon an "unsuspecting human world" in April 1978 on the band's own Vengeance Records label. It was a two song 7-inch with a version of the Trashmen's 1963 classic 'Surfin' Bird,' pushed well beyond it's breaking point, forcing it to mutate into a much higher form of lowdown, and Jack Scott's 1959 cool burning 'The Way I Walk,' dragged back into the Stone Age... After one listen, it was clear the Cramps had absolutely tapped into Rock 'n' Roll's mainline. In November of the same year, and again from the October 1977 sessions came another two song lesson in how it's done, or undone, with easily one of the greatest A sides of all time: 'Human Fly.' The B side was held hostage by "Domino," originally sung by Roy Orbison. The Cramps' version swaggers with infinite confidence and is an absolute thrill to listen to. In the summer of 1979, young degenerates in England were treated to a 12-inch by the Cramps called Gravest Hits, which featured not only the aforementioned four tracks, but also a fifth, again from the October 1977 sessions... "What happened to the rest of the tracks from those auspicious days in October 1977? In 2026, Larry Hardy, owner and operator of In The Red Records, repelled down, deep into the vast, sunless vault of the Cramps tape collection, and resurfaced hours later, disoriented and out of breath, but overjoyed with what he'd returned to topside with: six 1/4" reels of tracks, mixed by Lux [Interior] and [Poison] Ivy... Gravest Gravy is one of the purest collections of unrestrained, wild music you'll ever hear-like Jerry Lee Lewis unchained, like Elvis meets Tarzan-like it should be. The Cramps were one of the greatest bands in the history of recorded music, and anyone who heard or saw them, knows and abides by this groovin' truth. From their inception to this day, the band has fans whose enthusiasm for their life-changing music never wavers. The Cramps made this music for the love of Rock 'n' Roll. Dedicated to Ricky Nelson, a DATE WITH ELVIS (1986) is the third Cramps studio album, recorded five years after their last, 1981's PSYCHEDELIC JUNGLE (in the interim, the band recorded a number of EPs and a pair of live albums, and extracted themselves from a legal dispute with their old record label). Playing as a three-piece, with the extremely talented Poison Ivy on guitar and bass (as well as singing on a couple of tracks!), the band turned their most solid studio record. From the brilliant usage of a preschool choir singing the chorus of "People Ain't No Good" to a crunching cover of "Get Off the Road", the theme song of the 1968 biker exploitation flick, SHE DEVILS ON WHEELS, the record includes a bunch of ought-a-be classics. Standouts include the faux-hippie duet of "Kizmiaz", one of the band's several peaks of hyperactive, juvenile sexual obsession; "Hot Pool of Womanneed", featuring lyrics like "As Jacob said to Isaiah / in them biblin' days of yore / Man that babe is the tomata / Oh my Lord I'm longin' for"; and Lux Interior's nearly perfect impression of the King on "It's Just That Song". Released in 1983 after a lengthy court battle with IRS Records, SMELL OF FEMALE originally contained just the first six songs. These, plus out-of-control ad-lib freakouts 'Beautiful Gardens' and 'She Said' (previously omitted due to legal restrictions) were recorded live at New York's famous Peppermint Lounge. There is nothing like the sound of The Cramps, and this set distills that cross of swamp water, moonshine and nitro down to a dangerous and unstable musical substance, captured live like a crazed animal. They rocked like few others could. Additional bonus track 'Surfin' Dead' was recorded at A&M Studios in Hollywood and originally appeared on the 1984 soundtrack for Return of the Living Dead - when asked to write a pop song for the movie, The Cramps (by then a three-piece) threw into their cauldron a mix of Link Wray, Jan & Dean, Davie Allen, the Righteous Brothers, bongos, Phil Spector and eye of newt.

Tracks:
1.1 Thee Most Exalted Potentate of Love
1.2 You Got Good Taste
1.3 Call of the Wighat
1.4 Faster Pussycat
1.5 I Ain't Nuthin' But a Gorehound
1.6 Psychotic Reaction
1.7 Beautiful Gardens
1.8 She Said
1.9 Surfin' Dead

Audio Sample:
All soundclips are provided by Tidal and are for illustrative purposes only.
