He turned pro in 1961 and worked with Teddy Edwards, Chico Hamilton and Phineas newborn among others. He made his recording debut as a leader in 1963 with "west coast vibes" produced by legend Leonard Feather. He then spent six years with Herbie Mann and recorded many Atlantic LPs with him including the classic "Memphis underground".· Ayers is considered by many to be the father of both "funk jazz" and "smooth jazz". An extremely prolific artist, he has recorded over 50 albums in a career spanning more than 40 years. This is the first worldwide release of the obscure 2001 release 'perfection' (originally recorded for Ayers' own AFI label in 2000 and now out of print). Quintessential "smooth jazz" at it's best and a must for all fans of the vibraphone and the soul jazz genre. 2006.

Tracks:
1.1 Drome
1.2 Ears
1.3 Steppin'
1.4 Wave
1.5 Thick ; Thin
1.6 Perfection
1.7 Colors
1.8 Afro
1.9 Smoke
1.10 Bags
1.11 Fish
1.12 Calm
1.13 Clear
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1033/0151/3561/files/556561_f7f7c97e-3eb5-4be7-acfa-2083fdae2712.jpg?v=1788058763
roy-ayers-west-coast-vibes-shm-compact-discs
Roy Ayers: West Coast Vibes - SHM - COMPACT DISCS
Title: West Coast Vibes - SHM
Artist: Roy Ayers
Label: Universal Japan
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 4988031802205
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2025-11-21
Number of Discs: 1
Additional Details: JAPAN - IMPORT, SUPER-HIGH MATERIAL CD

From the "Jazz Masterpieces Best & More" series once released by EMI, 30 carefully selected works are being reissued on SHM-CD. Roy Ayer's superb Lots of Love was originally released on his own independent Uno Melodic label. The album is one of Ayers' deepest releases stylistically, spanning everything from Fela Kuti-Afrobeat to seminal '80s Boogie Funk. The album includes the super-dark 'Chicago', much loved by Moodyman, Theo Parrish and other Detroit minimalists. Recorded around the time of other seminal Roy Ayers productions such as Eighties Ladies and Sylvia Striplin, this really is as good as it gets. Full of Roy Ayers classics plus three bonus tracks. This retrospective spotlights a prolific purple patch in Ayers' career, focusing on the mid-to- late 1970s when he took the vibraphone into the pop mainstream via a series of commercially successful albums for Polydor Records. Roy's Band, which had previously been known as the Roy Ayers Quartet - a name that Ayers thought was too "square" and described as "a drag" - morphed into a much larger ensemble called Roy Ayers Ubiquity. Ayers said: "At that time, in 1970 when I joined Polydor, my manager, said 'Roy, you should name the group Ubiquity.' I said what does that mean? 'Ubiquity means a state of being everywhere at the same time.' I said, 'That's fate because if everyone has one of my albums I will be everywhere.' I thought it was great so I started using that name." Key Tracks on this package are 'Running Away' which is not only featured as the album version, but also as an the 12" extended mix bonus track, 'Evolution', 'Het, Uh What You Say Come On', 'The Third Eye', 'Tongue Power', 'Domelo (Give It To Me)', 'Searching' and 'The Golden Rod'. Vice President and President elect Kamala Harris recently described 'Everybody Loves The Sunshine' as one of her favourite albums of all time. Ayers announced his retirement from touring in 2023, the five albums in this box set capture him at his peak. In The Dark was produced by Stanley Clarke in 1984. With Grover Washington and Tom Browne as the main horn players the album is about the perfect mix of slick mid-'80s boogie funk and the kind of jazz-funk Roy pioneered a decade earlier on the title song,"Sexy, Sexy, Sexy" and the late in the day disco-funk of "Compadre". "I Can't Help It" is a mild vibe led ballad. But the most potent track is "Goree Island", a sizzling electronic afro-funk number celebrating the rooted futurism of the jazz-funk genre itself. It's got the African polyrhythms down pat but also this '80s electro/boogie funk production too. On the more obvious deep '80s funk of "Poo Poo La La" Roy himself raps a bit about his desire for a lover who'll truly understand a musicians lifestyle and not take it personally.

Tracks:
1.1 In the Dark
1.2 Sexy, Sexy, Sexy
1.3 I Can't Help It
1.4 Compadre
1.5 Goree Island
1.6 Poo Poo la la
1.7 Blast the Box
1.8 Love Is in the Feel
1.9 In the Dark (Dance Mix)
1.10 Poo Poo la la (Edit)
1.11 Love Is in the Feel (7" Version)

Audio Sample:
All soundclips are provided by Tidal and are for illustrative purposes only. Ayers was born in Los Angeles, California and grew up in a musical family. At the age of five, Lionel Hampton gave him his first pair of mallets, which led to the vibraphone being his trademark sound for decades. The area of Los Angeles that Ayers grew up in, now known as South Central, but then known as South Park, was the epicenter of the Southern California Black Music Scene. The schools Roy attended (Wadsworth Elementary, Nevins Middle School, and Thomas Jefferson High School) were all close to the famed Central Avenue, Los Angeles' equivalent of Harlem's Lenox Avenue and Chicago's State Street. Roy would likely have been exposed to music as it not only emanated from the many nightclubs and bars in the area, but also poured out of many of the homes where the musicians who kept the scene alive lived in and around Central. His high school, Thomas Jefferson High School, from which Ayers graduated, produced some of the most talented new musicians, such as Dexter Gordon.

Tracks:
1.1 Hot
1.2 Programmed for Love
1.3 Virgo
1.4 You Might Be Surprised
1.5 Night Flyte
1.6 Can I See You
1.7 For You
1.8 Slip 'N' Slide
1.9 Programmed for Love (Extended Version)
1.10 Slip 'N' Slide (Single Version)
1.11 Hot (12" Version)
1.12 Programmed for Love (Edited Version)
1.13 Hot (Dub Mix)
1.14 Programmed for Love (Instrumental)
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1033/0151/3561/files/1707296_a3c18871-76b9-40b9-8860-f58161f72ae4.jpg?v=1788060199
ayers-roy-coffy-original-soundtrack
Roy Ayers: Coffy (Original Soundtrack) - VINYL
Title: Coffy (Original Soundtrack)
Artist: Roy Ayers
Label: Anagram Music LLC
Product Type: VINYL LP
UPC: 8435395504802
Genre: Soundtrack
Release Date: 2025-07-04
Number of Discs: 1

Vinyl LP pressing. Composed by vibes legend Roy Ayers for the soundtrack of the 1973 film starring Pam Grier, Coffy was a jazz chart hit. The music, an inventive mix of heavy funk and soul-jazz, with vocal highlights from Dee Dee Bridgewater, perfectly encapsulated Grier's vigilante character. Years later, director Quentin Tarantino, who lists Coffy among his favorite movies, hired Grier for his own feature, Jackie Brown.

Tracks:
1.1 Coffy Is the Color
1.2 Priscilla's Theme
1.3 King George
1.4 Aragon
1.5 Coffy Sauna
1.6 King's Last Ride
1.7 Coffy Baby
1.8 Brawling Broads
1.9 Escape
1.10 Shining Symbol
1.11 Exotic Dance
1.12 Making Love
1.13 Vittroni's Theme - King Is Dead
1.14 End of Sugarman
