Lifes Rich Pageant is the fourth studio album by R.E.M. This record widened their musical reach beyond college rock boundaries and resulted in scoring them their first gold certified record. Including excellent songs like ‘Fall On Me’, 'I Believe,' 'Flowers of Guatemala,' 'These Days,' and 'What If We Give It Away,' it's ironic that the most memorable moment comes from the garage rock obscurity 'Superman,' which is sung by Mike Mills. The album, originally released in 1986, was produced by Don Gehman, which was recorded at John Mellencamp's Belmont Mall Studios. Dead Letter Office is a collection of rarities and b-sides by R.E.M. Released in 1987, the album is essentially a collection of many additional recordings R.E.M. made pre-Murmur to Lifes Rich Pageant that were outtakes or released as flip sides to their singles internationally. Many of the tracks are favorite cover versions indicating the band's disparate influences and musical tastes, including three Velvet Underground covers, and songs by Pylon, Aerosmith and Roger Miller. Guitarist Peter Buck composed wry, self-deprecating (and, in one instance, apologetic) liner notes to the songs on the album. Buck initially had doubts about releasing it, saying he felt as though people would perceive the album as the band "trying to cash in, maybe to sell some records," as the ultimate release date predated that of the band's final studio album with I.R.S., Document, by a mere five months.

Tracks:
1.1 Crazy
1.2 There She Goes Again
1.3 Burning Down
1.4 Voice of Harold
1.5 Burning Hell
1.6 White Tornado
1.7 Toys in the Attic
2.1 Wind Out
2.2 Ages of You
2.3 Pale Blue Eyes
2.4 Rotary Ten
2.5 Bandwagon
2.6 Femme Fatale
2.7 Walter's Theme
2.8 King of the Road
Title: Out Of Time
Artist: R.E.M.
Label: Concord Records
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 888072004078
Genre: Rock
Release Date: 2016-11-18
Number of Discs: 1
Additional Details: REMASTERED

Digitally remastered 25th Anniversary edition of this 1991 album by the alt-rock outfit. Digitally remastered edition. R.E.M.'s ninth album, ?Monster, was released in September 1994. At that time, the members of R.E.M. were at a crossroads in their career. Singer Michael Stipe, guitarist Peter Buck, bassist Mike Mills and drummer Bill Berry were decompressing from the massive commercial and critical success of 1991's Out of Time and 1992's Automatic for the People. In just a few years, the Athens, GA, four-piece had become one of the biggest, most recognizable bands in the world. It had also been six years since the group had toured. By the time that work began on Monster, they were itching to end their self-imposed hiatus and get back on the road. The band was also looking for a sonic shake-up. While R.E.M.'s last two albums were full of ballads, acoustic rock songs and intricate arrangements, the group was ready to record something grittier, brasher and highly playable on stage. It's one of those albums that never gets tiring. While these songs are simple and catchy they still avoid coming off as boring and cheesy. This is an alt/rock album that has amazing guitar riffs, melodies, lyrics, and replay value. R.E.M. mixes this album up by putting in some alt/country songs that don't keep things from being monotonous. The thing that makes 'Reckoning' stand out is it's ability to get three and four songs stuck in your head at a time. R.E.M. developed a strangely subdued variation of their trademark sound for their full-length debut album, one that sounds uncannily eternal and as if it has existed forever. Whether it's the measured riffs of "Pilgrimage," the melancholic "Talk About the Passion," or the winding guitars and pianos of "Perfect Circle." The individuality lies in the atmospheric production, which radiates a detached sense of mystery, but it also comes from the bizarrely talented songwriting. The spidery guitar lines on "Catapult," performed with a charmingly punky weirdness and slightly sinister melancholy, seem to suggest that things in the past were not as simple or innocent as they seemed. An album that radiates confidence and emphasizes the beat, the band turns in it's hardest rockers to date, including the anthemic "Begin the Begin" and the punky "Just a Touch." Lyrically, this is the album where the band get political. "Fall On Me" is a wonderful song about the effect of capitalism on the environment. The band sounds more contemporary both musically and lyrically than they did on their previous albums, which helps give the record that extra kick.
