Instantly ingratiating hooks abound as Kevin Barnes' compositions constantly mutate and shape-shift in ways that defy conventional pop song structure and album sequencing. Though Of Montreal have never been strangers to expressing sexuality in their music, Skeletal Lamping finds Barnes fully immersed in the topic. Throughout the record, sexuality is presented as a broad continuum encompassing a wide range of experiences, anxieties, emotions and orientations. In Skeletal Lamping, Barnes argues that identity is fluid, malleable, and limited only by one's imagination. Kevin and Christina discuss taking ecstasy as couple's therapy. Kevin and Christina break down and then reconnect. The new love we heard about on the last Of Montreal record, White is Relic/Irrealis Mood, is settling. If that was the falling-in-love record, then this is the staying-in-love record. That was the easy part; this is the interesting part, the challenging part, the next chapter of Barnes' autobiographical album streak, UR FUN. After several albums recorded with collaborators and various band members, Barnes opted to record this one completely alone. In his home studio in Athens, Georgia, Barnes isolated himself in creative hibernation, working obsessive 12-plus hour days arranging manic synth and drum machine maps on a computer screen with bouncy, melodic basslines, glam guitars and layered vocal harmonies. Inspired by albums like Cyndi Lauper's She's So Unusual and Janet Jackson's Control, Barnes set out to make UR FUN into the kind of album where every song could be a single, complete with huge hooky choruses and nostalgic dance grooves. The result is an unstoppably fun album that could also pass for a carefully sequenced greatest-hits collection if taken out of context. UR FUN is another fascinating look into what makes Barnes one of the most prolific and gifted songwriters of this decade.

Tracks:
1.1 Peace to All Freaks
1.2 Polyaneurism
1.3 Get God's Attention By Being An Atheist
1.4 Gypsy That Remains - By of Montreal ; Locate S, 1
1.5 You've Had Me Everywhere
2.1 Carmillas of Love
2.2 Don't Let Me Die in America
2.3 St. Sebastian
2.4 Deliberate Self-Harm Ha Ha
2.5 20th Century Schizofriendic Revengoid-Man
Title: Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
Artist: Of Montreal
Label: Polyvinyl Records
Product Type: VINYL LP
UPC: 644110940018
Genre: Rock
Release Date: 2017-06-30
Number of Discs: 1
Additional Details: DIGITAL DOWNLOAD CARD, COLORED VINYL, RED, YELLOW

Limited edition colored vinyl LP pressing, includes digital download. Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? is Of Montreal's landmark 2007 album. The release defined Of Montreal's career and continues to be hailed as a classic. It also happens to be Polyvinyl's all-time best-selling album to date. With Hissing Fauna, Of Montreal created it's masterpiece. It's an irresistible and remarkable album, sounding like a logical extension of the erratic indie-disco sounds of The Sunlandic Twins. However, Hissing Fauna is also the most personal Of Montreal album to date, with Kevin Barnes pouring tremendous amounts of emotion, heartbreak, frustration and elation into it's 12 tracks. Written and recorded primarily during what he calls "an insane year," Hissing Fauna saw Barnes adopt a new writing style. It's an unabashedly autobiographical attempt from a songwriter whose early material tended towards characters and story-songs. Celebrated for their unique and prolific output, frontperson and primary songwriter / multi-instrumentalist Kevin Barnes recorded the album at Brooklyn's Honey Jar studios with audio engineer, Drew Vandenberg (Faye Webster, Toro y Moi), with basic tracking done live to a 16-track tape machine with Barnes' longtime live band. "I wanted to capture a quick moment together and to make on-the-fly, spontaneous creative decisions," says Barnes. "It felt very liberating and exhilarating to have to start and finish an album in a month's time." The result shimmers with indie pop elements of their 2004 release, Satanic Panic in the Attic, as well as the raw, live energy of 2013's Lousy With Sylvianbriar. Inspired partly from a recent move to Brooklyn, NY and a yearning for community, the album marks a shift in Barnes' daily routines, with the album's title referencing a section of Prospect Park called the Nethermead, where Barnes walks their dog every day. "I started a meditation practice soon after moving to help me self-regulate," says Barnes. "I began to imagine I was sending all my destructive and useless thoughts/energies into the ether." Barnes' beautiful and melodic chord progressions are on full display with tracks like "Already Dreaming," as well as the straight-up rock & roll banger "Take The Form." Other highlights include the loungey "My Zhe Zhe," as well as the bluntly sexual lead single, "When." From the breakthrough brilliance of 2007's Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? to a steady run of boundary-pushing releases, Of Montreal have remained fearless sonic shapeshifters-equally at home crafting hook-laden anthems as they are exploring surreal, experimental textures. The band's prolific output has led to numerous late-night TV appearances-including The Late Show with David Letterman and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon-and brilliant collaborations with artists such as Solange, Janelle Monáe, and Jon Brion. On stage, they transform concerts into immersive spectacles of color, costume, and cathartic energy. The band has performed across the globe, gracing festival stages at Coachella, Primavera, Lollapalooza, Vive Latino and beyond, while also amassing hundreds of millions of streams worldwide. Innocence Reaches begins with a query. "How do you identify?" coos a robotic voice over a strikingly modern mix of bright synthpop and surging rave. The question too feels very of it's time-as outdated ideas about gender and attraction are being overturned-but it's also a fair ask whenever Of Montreal debuts an album. The project's 14th LP follows two full decades of mercurial creative mania: swallowing up '60s psych-pop, Prince-ly funk, and glammy prog in turn; morphing freely between full-band affair and cloistered confessional booth; comprising lyrics both painfully personal and absurdly fantastical; and recently drawing site-specific inspiration from culture capitals like San Francisco or New York City. The thread that runs through it all is Athens, GA's Kevin Barnes, and Innocence Reaches finds him at his most light-hearted in years, working a Parisian stint, Top 40 sounds, and his newfound single status into the kaleidoscopic swirl. Even as he continues to sift the sonic and emotional detritus of his past, Barnes sums up his current mood in the opener's title: "let's relate." Innocence Reaches features darker moments to be sure-isolation, anger, indifference, and the feeling that, like a Truffaut film, madness lurks just outside the frame-but as Barnes explains, "Epiphany comes from breakdown. If you can stay open and vulnerable, the nebulous becomes transparent. Barnes' songwriting and production aesthetic has since become iconic in the industry and has garnered massive critical acclaim in publications such as Rolling Stone, The New York Times, NPR, and Pitchfork, who described the band's album, Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer? as "ceaselessly fascinating and inexhaustibly replayable," as well as ranking it as the #5 album of the year. Barnes' influence on pop music is undeniable, with multiple late night TV appearances, including The Late Show With David Letterman and Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, as well as brilliant collaborations with the likes of Solange, Janelle Monáe, Jon Brion, and others. The band has also performed across the globe, with festival appearances at Coachella, Sasquatch!, Pitchfork Music Festival and others, as well as hundreds of millions of streams worldwide. On Of Montreal's latest album, Freewave Lucifer f ck f ck f ck, Barnes continues to push the boundaries of what pop music can be. On songs like "Marijuana's A Working Woman," Barnes revisits themes of psychedelia using pulsating synths over their instantly recognizable bass playing. The album also touches on aspects of gender fluidity and is a fascinating look at what makes Barnes one of the most prolific and creative songwriters making music today. "An astonishingly good late-period record from Of Montreal that's as uncomfortably savage in it's depiction of breakup psychology as it is relentlessly catchy." -Pitchfork (8.7 Best New Music - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?)"The thesaurus-loving psychedelic chameleons return with what might be the glammiest groove since the late Marc Bolan shimmied on to the next dimension." -Rolling Stone on Aureate Gloom"[Lousy With Sylvianbriar] is one of the most memorable, lasting, and relatable albums in Of Montreal's extensive catalog, and easily one of the best." -AllMusic"... every year or so Of Montreal is going to release a new full-length of mind-bending glam-punk decadence that sort of blows everything else away." -Paste

Tracks:
1.1 Marijuana's a Working Woman
1.2 Ofrenda-Flanger-Ego-À Gogo
1.3 Blab Sabbath Lathe of Maiden
1.4 Après Thee Dèclassè
1.5 Modern Art Bewilders
1.6 Nightsift
1.7 HMMM
