Assuming the persona of an obscure Japanese synth-chanson singer called Megumi Satsu, he records 1980s-style songs about murder, ageing and war using a new vocal technique halfway between Satsu's rambling, guttural cries and the Sprechgesang (speaking-singing) style pioneered a century ago by Arnold Schoenberg. As the lights dim, we find ourselves in - as one song puts it - "the theatre of the self". The chord sequences this time are baroque-inspired and the textures synthetic, so artists like Klaus Nomi swim into view, bringing distant echoes of Handel and Purcell. A more poppy tone emerges in songs like Captivate and Hotdesking, influenced - oddly enough - by South Korean pop-dance sensation New Jeans. Lyrically, these songs make bridges between political themes of military invasion - with the ongoing Ukraine war as a constant backdrop - and the idea of personal charm as a guilty and ambivalent power strategy. A 1980 duet between Kermit the Frog and Debbie Harry inspires Men Are The Problem, a sigh of exasperation about the foolish machismo still rampant in geopolitics. Humour returns in the form of a song recounting the plot of Walerian Borowczyk's 1975 erotic horror film The Beast, and towards the end of the record British comedian Tony Hancock pops up to parody beatnik poetry. Chugging, surreal chords and nonsense lyrics finally tug the record towards the psychedelic soundscapes of Wire's 1979 album 154. And it goes without saying - this being Momus at his most theatrical - that David Bowie's influence is here too, as strong as ever.

Tracks:
1.1 1. Somehow the American electorate failed to listen and elected Trump anyway. The issue, for non-MAGA people, then became where to position oneself on a spectrum running from quietism to activism. It's a theme which bounces through Quietism, a quiet yet poppy album focused on the sound of a real acoustic guitar (the machine which "kills fascists", as Woody Guthrie liked to say). One might want to reduce the idiotic noise of this world, to retreat into a privileged world of beauty and intelligence, to become an introvert or a recluse. But politics cannot be denied, even by a Paris-based aesthete. In a new take on the old cliché: "First they came for the quietists and I said nothing..." One tiny piece of aesthetic activism going on here is the choice of a South American musical idiom: 1960s bossa nova, partly generated by 2020s AI tools which are North American. A secondary theme - very much related to the use of AI - is mimicry, and the dialectical tug between authenticity and the synthetic, human input and the impact of robotics. What's real, what's fake, and which of those - the mask or the supposed face beneath - gets us to a more interesting place? A filmic vocabulary appears: there are continuity girls, spoiler alerts, actors whose props win Academy Awards. At the end the album presents it's human author with an imaginary medal, for this is his "imperial phase" - a double-edged sword representing both his own artistic zenith and a period in which the world is dominated by new empires, old oligarchs.

Tracks:
1.1 The Actor
1.2 Orange Pills 3
1.3 30,000 Nights
1.4 My Apprentice Devil
1.5 Spoiler Alert
1.6 The Quietist
1.7 Noise Reduction
1.8 Trauma Bingo
1.9 The Butcher's Beautiful Wife
1.10 Life with Eno
1.11 Impostor Syndrome
1.12 Imperial Phase
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1033/0151/3561/files/4407040-3328900_13d2c4c1-aaaf-43ed-993e-f0270dafa323.jpg?v=1788058340
momus-ballyhoo
Momus: Ballyhoo - COMPACT DISCS
Title: Ballyhoo
Artist: Momus
Label: American Patchwork
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 708527240205
Genre: Electronic
Release Date: 2024-10-25
Number of Discs: 1
Additional Details: LIMITED EDITION, DIGIPACK PACKAGING

2024 release. Themes of sexual orientation and gender identity thrust and cluster through this, his 2022 album, recorded in Berlin and named after the writer Christopher Isherwood... or, rather, the way Isherwood's Berlin landlady mispronounced his name when, with the poet Auden and other sexual exiles, he lived amongst queers and cabaret singers during the dying days of the Weimar Republic, teetering at the eerie brink of Nazism. It would be nice to think that, a century later, we'd moved on. Fascism, alas, still menaces us just as it menaced Mr Issyvoo, limiting our personal choices with nannying safetyism or outright dictatorship. Other themes churn through this playful yet serious record: guilt in the art world, the primitivist fantasies of expressionist painters, Britain's semi-feudal monarchy, the laughter of lawyers, the lonely battles of social media, the prettiness of monkeys and the splishy-splashiness of joy. The music this time is hooky and poppy. If we really are sauntering into a "pocket apocalypse" here's a wonderful way to whistle some of it's big issues.

Tracks:
1.1 1. Sixteen tracks were recorded in Paris in early spring, making this the first Parisian Momus album since 1995's The Philosophy of Momus. French pop naturally forms a backdrop to the songwriting, with echoes of the music hall of Charles Trenet, the chanson of Leo Ferre and Jacques Brel, and Megumi Satsu's Japanese takes on Topor lyrics in the 1980s. But there are also influences from Italian cinema - a tribute to Nino Rota, a song based on Japanese TV commercials featuring Marcello Mastroianni - and from Manchester groups like The Fall and New Order. Other tracks wink in the direction of John Barry, Disney, Eddie Cantor, the Ink Spots and Morris dancing. While many of these influences are retro, the album also reflects the concerns of 2024, with Putin menacing the West with threats of nuclear war and AI taking over people's jobs (there's even a song partly written by AI here).

Tracks:
1.1 Disk 1: Yikes!
1.2 1. Pantaloon sees Momus - veteran Scottish indie crooner Nick Currie - celebrating his return to Berlin (after eight years in Osaka) with a topical cabaret album which sets current political developments in a "neo-Weimar" of the imagination: a musical space influenced by Brecht and Weill's theater songs, the tribal rock opera Hair, traces of psychedelia and echoes of post-punk groups like Wire and Magazine. These thirteen songs - recorded in rapid succession during August 2018, they're some of the most confident and heartfelt of Momus' long career - address topics like Brexit, climate change, oligarchy and it's unholy alliance with populism, and the new politics of borders, blood and soil. But they're also about the satisfactions of personal life, and how we can offset the shadows in the newspaper headlines (not to mention the onrush of mortality) with various kinds of optimism, and with love, sex, art, myth, and the imagination. The last word is given to Agnes Bernelle, a Berlin cabaret singer who settled in Dublin, having fought the Nazis by beaming black propaganda into Germany: "You want to be rich, well isn't that what you are?"

Tracks:
1.1 When I Was An Animal
1.2 Burning the Flag
1.3 The Beckmanns
1.4 Good Time Coming
1.5 Glacier
1.6 Little Paper Humans
1.7 Brexochasm
1.8 Escalator
1.9 The Fisher King
1.10 Osip Mandelstam
1.11 Rootless Cosmopolitans
1.12 Goodbye Mr. Quin
1.13 The Nightingale

Audio Sample:
All soundclips are provided by Tidal and are for illustrative purposes only. Named after the Greek god of mockery, Momus is prolific Scottish songwriter, author and journalist Nick Curry, who has now been releasing critically acclaimed music in a style all of his own for over thirty years. Following Cherry Red's recent release of Momus' first three Creation Records albums, the final three classic albums for Creation Records (Hippopotamomus - 1991, Voyager - 1992, Timelord - 1993) have now been compiled together in one very attractive package, combining this already genius material with a selection of fantastic bonus tracks selected by Momus himself. Hippopotamomus, Momus's fourth Creation Records LP, was seen as the artist's flat-out tribute to his idol Serge Gainsbourg, which courted controversy in a similar vein to his idol's antics upon it's release by landing the artist in hot water, both in the music press, and in the courtroom for it's questionable content. It's follow-up, Voyager, is often seen as Momus's first, and best, in his trilogy of albums addressing the near-future sci-fi androgeny of Japan. While Timelord remains Momus' open love letter during his personal romantic turmoil of the early '90s. All three of the albums contained in this package sound as fresh today as they did upon their first release, and this package is sure to please hardcore Momus followers and new fans alike. On March 16th, in lockdown in Berlin, Momus had begun recording a new album called Vivid. "Goodbye everyone, it's a scary old world, but thanks for the ride", ran the lyric to Oblivion, a song whose rapid, phasing accordions evoked the post-minimalism of Steve Reich, Michael Nyman and Meredith Monk. The following day the Scottish songwriter came down with COVID-19 himself, and spent a week in bed, feverish and frightened. The infection passed without much damage, and Momus was able to resume work, completing fifteen tracks in just over a month. Songs like Working From Home, Self-Isolation, My Corona and Ten Foot Hut explore the odd mixture of fear and boredom that the pandemic has unleashed on us all: the sense of being possessed by some kind of malign spirit, and the vague hope that a better world might emerge at the end of all this. There's even room for some dark humour in the form of a chilly, forensic cover of Tom Lehrer's epidemiological song I Got It From Agnes. Vivid - already hailed as one of the strongest Momus albums in years - is published simultaneously with Niche, a playful autobiography described by Publishers Weekly as "that rare show-biz memoir that's both entertaining and a literary triumph".

Tracks:
1.1 Oblivion
1.2 Working from Home
1.3 Ten Foot Hut
1.4 September
1.5 Parasite
1.6 .Self-Isolation
1.7 Empty Paris
1.8 Movement
1.9 I Got It from Agnes
1.10 My Corona
1.11 Long Distance Love
1.12 Spring
1.13 Levitation
1.14 Fever Dream
1.15 Optimism

Audio Sample:
All soundclips are provided by Tidal and are for illustrative purposes only. Lieder reached it's zenith with Schubert's song cycle Die Winterreise; Momus "smudges" this Romantic tradition by opening with a melancholy electronic pop take on Schubert's setting of the poem Gute Nacht, with lyrics newly and freely translated: "The stranger is arriving, a stranger I will leave..." There's another German journey in Bergreise, a song based on the evocative names of German synthesisers. And the album ends with Hanns Eisler's setting of a Brecht poem, On the Friendliness of the World. Before that, though, there are songs which sound like Joni Mitchell, or revive Herman Melville characters, or sound like Rex Harrison musicals scripted by Marty Feldman. There are constant references to Lodger, David Bowie's most eclectic and eccentric album - Influencer Village, for instance, updates Bowie's DJ to the age of eyeball-hungry social media. As for 19th century British burlesque, there are songs which draw on the music hall routines of comics like Harry Champion and Albert Chevalier, songs which introduce character "turns" like The Coffee Professor. The Benjamin Britten influence can be heard in Peter Grimes, a murky retelling of the opera of the same name. And there's a Bond theme pastiche in Supervillain. In the end, though, this is a classic Momus album, full of songs that remind us of his many "adventures in culture" across four decades: Stop the Body is a post-Covid take on his laidback 1987 epic Closer to You, and Totentanz recalls his "folktronic" period. Pesky Blighters even revisits the minimalist systems music of Vivid (2020). What exactly is Smudger smudging, then? With a joyful, playful smear the album blurs past and present, self and other, tradition and innovation, mockery and respect. On the smudging finger, though, always the distinctive Momus print.

Tracks:
1.1 January
1.2 Stop the Body
1.3 Disappear
1.4 Orchestras
1.5 Bartleby
1.6 Supervillain
1.7 Midnight Sun
1.8 Friends
1.9 Smudge
1.10 Coffee Professor
1.11 Influencer Village
1.12 Totentanz
1.13 Pesky Blighters
1.14 Bergreise
1.15 Peter Grimes
1.16 Night Clinic
1.17 Friendly World

Audio Sample:
All soundclips are provided by Tidal and are for illustrative purposes only. Momus - indie veteran, Japan-dwelling Scot, David Bowie impersonator, unreliable tour guide, novelist - makes a record every year. Each release becomes a sort of barometer of the cultural and emotional weather around him, filtered through his own preoccupations. 2017's release is called Pillycock and features a strong influence from Pasolini's Trilogy of Life films (the Arabian Nights, the Decameron, the Canterbury Tales), from the rich Elizabethan language of pamphleteer Thomas Nashe, from Jacobean revenge tragedy, from Fellini, psychedelia, snippets of guerilla music foregrounded by artists like Wael Shawky and Kader Attia, early hip-hop, and the skirl and thump of Japan's exuberant summer festivals. What on earth could these brightly-colored strands have in common, and what's Momus up to when he weaves them together - with deliberate inauthenticity and anachronism - over modal electronic folk music using an Arabic scale called Bayati? Perhaps it's their common distance from milquetoast modern Western culture which makes these themes so oddly appealing; invoking the power of imagination and our constant desire for the new, the dark and the strange, this "art of distances" helps us transform and refresh a world which, up close, gets sick, sweet, repetitious or rotten.

Tracks:
1.1 Italian
1.2 MacBeth
1.3 Charcoal
1.4 Guerilla
1.5 Ghost
1.6 Judy
1.7 Pillycock
1.8 Crusoe
1.9 2009
1.10 Eurotrash
1.11 Drunkenness
1.12 Whites
1.13 Canterbury
1.14 Tryster
1.15 Literature
1.16 Scuttle

Audio Sample:
All soundclips are provided by Tidal and are for illustrative purposes only. In late 1969 young Nick Currie moved to Athens with his family and soaked up the Greek sun for a couple of years while listening to The Beatles' Abbey Road album and the rock opera Hair. Approximately fifty years later - now named after the Greek god Momus, and eager to investigate claims that Athens is "the new Berlin" - Nick returned to winter in the city with his French girlfriend. When Noémie left - and lockdown dragged on - Nick set about making an album called Athenian. The 2021 album from Momus, then, has a Greek flavor, and keeps getting drawn back to the years 1969-1971. Unlike Vivid, it's predecessor, Athenian is not about confronting the pandemic with a combination of darkness and dignity. This time the emphasis is on lightness and laughter. The same accordion-based sound might drive the record, but vintage British comedians like Frankie Howerd, Ted Ray, Kenneth Horne and Benny Hill keep popping up this time, spreading much-needed laughter and lightness. Much as in his novel The Book of Jokes, Momus slows their routines down, warps them, and fills them up with corpses, clowns, ghosts and zombies. We may be doomscrolling through a horrorworld, but at least we can still laugh. Even when serious names pop up - Karl Kraus, the apocalyptic Viennese satirist, or Wyndham Lewis with his Tyros, those toothy hooligans avid for novelty in the years following the flu epidemic and the First World War - they seem to be playing some of the same games as the comedians: inventing characters, testing what you can and can't say these days, and making fun of the prejudices of people who seem to be living life with their values all topsy-turvy.

Tracks:
1.1 Swansong
1.2 Greyland
1.3 Chatternooga
1.4 Under the Volcano
1.5 Zooming
1.6 Horrorworld
1.7 Coco the Clown
1.8 My Moriarty
1.9 Francoise
1.10 Nono
1.11 The Drizzle of March
1.12 The Tyro
1.13 The Existentialist
1.14 Bus Inspector Bill
1.15 Doomscroll
1.16 Athenian

Audio Sample:
All soundclips are provided by Tidal and are for illustrative purposes only. Back in 1987 Momus was in a London studio finishing The Poison Boyfriend, his debut album for Creation Records. Band of Holy Joy had a session the next day, so the 27 year-old Scot left a note wishing his friends well and adding: "You've got real accordions - I just use the horrible pre-programmed one in the DX7!" Thirty-two years later, now living in Berlin after a long spell in Japan, Momus finally purchased a real accordion from a junk shop on a street once split by the wall. Momus quickly discovered it's wide dynamic range, it's ability to stab, sob and wheeze and the ease with which chords could be pumped out using the buttons ranged down the lefthand side. Songs played on the new instrument (mixed in with sounds from the latest iPad apps) had a pleasing tendency to sound like Eisler's collaborations with Brecht during the late Weimar Republic years. Momus decided to make an album called Akkordion (the title mixes the German and English spellings) and drummed up sixteen new songs during the spookily hot summer. Many of them sound like garish clown music, political cabaret, surreal satire or radical vaudeville, with echoes of the accordion artists Momus knew in the neo-cabaret scene of 1980s London: The Pogues, Les Negresses Vertes, The Tiger Lillies, even solo Marc Almond and Nick Cave. What defines Akkordion is this tension between the light and dark: the bittersweet contrast between personal fulfilment and a political world dominated by division, toxicity and - let's face it - actual fascism. Like little Oskar Matzerath in The Tin Drum this accordion sends a scream through a world marred by disaccord.

Tracks:
1.1 The World of Night
1.2 What the Kite Thinks
1.3 The Poet
1.4 Lardybastard
1.5 People are Turning to Gold
1.6 Grand Guignol
1.7 Self Help
1.8 Catman Finley
1.9 Couple Me
1.10 Dylanology
1.11 Facial Recognition
1.12 Samurai
1.13 Inside
1.14 The Thief
1.15 Loneliness
1.16 Endarkenment

Audio Sample:
All soundclips are provided by Tidal and are for illustrative purposes only. After a two-year foray into book-writing and contemporary art, Momus returns to pop with his strongest release in over a decade. This time he's focused on what he calls "the catnip factor". Just what is it that makes US want to play a great song over and over again on YouTube? What is it about some simple chords and rhymes that really gets under our skin and penetrates deep into our memory and emotion? After avoiding pop, or asking it to do things books and art can do better, Momus suddenly found himself, in the spring of 2010, playing his favorite songs on YouTube, drawing inspiration for new songs from them, recording the songs and making videos for them during marathon "videosong" sessions, then uploading the results straight up to YouTube. Maybe the same is true for indie veteran Momus, because on his new album Ocky Milk he's gone far beyond the literary singer/songwriter fare of his 90s records (think Tom Lehrer with a laptop). The new record is strange, twilit stuff. Pop songs get fed through Google translation engines then crooned underwater, absurd vaudeville numbers about death accompany a Bonnie Prince Charlie car commercial shot in Japan. The weirdest thing, though, is just how relaxing it ends up feeling.

Tracks:
1.1 Hypnoprism
1.2 The Charm Song
1.3 Datapanik
1.4 Evil Genius
1.5 Mr Consistency
1.6 Deliverance
1.7 Is There Sex in Marriage?
1.8 Death Ruins Everything
1.9 Bubble Music
1.10 The Building Song
1.11 Confiance Absolue
1.12 Adoration
1.13 Strawberry Hill

Audio Sample:
All soundclips are provided by Tidal and are for illustrative purposes only.
