Digitally remastered edition of this 1972 release. Transformer is the second solo studio album by Lou Reed. Produced by David Bowie and arranged by Mick Ronson, the album was released in November 1972 by RCA Records. Bowie had been an early fan of the Velvet Underground, and used his own fame to promote Reed, then a cult favorite who had not yet achieved mainstream success, and had seen his self-titled solo debut album released a year earlier fall into obscurity. Transformer is one of Reed's strongest and consistent solo albums, and contains the songs \"Satellite of Love\", \"Perfect Day\" and \"Walk on the Wild Side\". As with it's predecessor Lou Reed, Transformer contains songs Reed composed while in the Velvet Underground (here, four out of ten). As in Reed's Velvet Underground days, the Andy Warhol connection remained strong. According to Reed, Warhol told him he should write a song about someone vicious. The album was released near Reed's 40th birthday, and covers topics of marriage and settling down, alongside themes of violence, paranoia, and alcoholism. Reed and Robert Quine's guitars were mixed separately in the right and left stereo channels respectively. To differentiate his guitar's sound from Reed's, Quine used D tuning, playing each song as if it was one major second lower. The concept was created when producer Bob Ezrin mentioned to Lou Reed that although the stories told by Reed's songs had great beginnings - they never really had an ending. Specifically, Ezrin wanted to know what happened to the couple from Berlin - a song from Reed's first solo album. The album is a tragic rock opera about a doomed couple, Jim and Caroline, and addresses themes of drug use, prostitution, depression, domestic violence and suicide. Instrumentally, Reed plays acoustic guitar. As with Reed's previous two studio albums, Berlin re-drafts several songs that had been written and recorded previously. The title track first appeared on Reed's solo debut album, only here it is simplified, the key changed and re-arranged for solo piano. \"Oh, Jim\" makes use of the Velvet Underground outtake \"Oh, Gin\". \"Caroline Says II\" is a rewrite of \"Stephanie Says\" from VU (though the latter was not released until 1985).
