Mount Royal, the second full-length album from virtuosic guitar duo Julian Lage & Chris Eldridge, is a testament to the visceral power of incredible musicianship and true creative collaboration. Produced by Gabe Witcher (one of Eldridge's fellow Punch Brothers), Mount Royal includes eight originals, several reimagined versions of old bluegrass songs, and a cover of Eddie Vedder's 'Sleeping By Myself' that is as engrossing as it is surprising. The arrangements on the album's 12, mostly instrumental tracks feature complex, rollicking guitar lines one would expect from such technically gifted players, but these moments are allowed to breathe. That is, Lage and Eldridge understand the potency of space in their compositions, and the sonic hills and valleys illustrate that greatness often lies in the unexpected. Lage's notable jazz background is apparent, yet Mount Royal ventures into old-time, gospel and bluegrass without ever settling into one genre. The energy between Lage and Eldridge is remarkable, and Mount Royal does not fail in conveying the pair's mutual passion for the acoustic guitar and respect for collaboration.

Tracks:
1.1 Bone Collector
1.2 Rygar
1.3 Everything Must Go
1.4 Things in Life
1.5 Old Grimes
1.6 Henry
1.7 Sleeping By Myself
1.8 Broadcast
1.9 Goldacre
1.10 Lion's Share
1.11 Living in the Mississippi Valley
1.12 Greener Grass

Audio Sample:
All soundclips are provided by Tidal and are for illustrative purposes only. That album - produced, like Modern Lore, by Lage's friend and collaborator, the singer-songwriter Jesse Harris - was his first trio set on electric guitar and found Lage inspired by the sounds and the attitude of the freewheeling, pre-bebop jazz era, when, as he puts it, "country music and jazz and swing were in this weird wild-west period." This time he incorporates the sensibility, if not the outright sound, of early rock and roll, a similarly hybrid form driven by rhythm, personality and a passion for the electric guitar.

Tracks:

Title: The Layers
Artist: Julian Lage
Label: Blue Note Records
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 602448669124
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2023-03-17
Number of Discs: 1

2023 release. Guitar virtuoso Julian Lage makes his Blue Note debut with an album that weds incisive, expressive songwriting with the profound interplay of his trio featuring Jorge Roeder and Dave King. The trio planned to record after a Village Vanguard residency in January 2020 but were delayed by the pandemic. Lage retooled the songs in light of the summer's lockdown and protests over social justice. Though only 31, the New York-based musician boasts a long, prolific résumé as sideman (alongside such icons as Gary Burton and John Zorn), duo partner (with Nels Cline, Chris Eldridge and Fred Hersch), and as soloist and bandleader. Love Hurts - which marks Lage's third Mack Avenue LP recorded with a trio, and his first to feature bassist Jorge Roeder and drummer Dave King (The Bad Plus) - sees the Grammy nominated guitarist exploring the American song catalog from a truly unique vantage point, performing music written by a range of audacious and original artists, from Roy Orbison to Ornette Coleman, Jimmy Giuffre to Peter Ivers. Lage and his rhythm section build upon the wandering sonic outlook of his previous LPs, further impelling his defining amalgam of jazz fusion, jam band liberation, standards, and embryonic rock 'n' roll with virtuosic precision, adventurous improvisation, and a remarkably clear vision.

Tracks:

Title: Arclight
Artist: Julian Lage
Label: Mack Avenue Records
Product Type: VINYL LP
UPC: 673203110717
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2016-06-10
Number of Discs: 1

Arclight, Julian Lage's Mack Avenue debut, marks his first recorded outing on electric guitar and in a trio format, backed by double bassist Scott Colley and drummer Kenny Wollesen.
