On \"Our Songs\", Alex Riel brings together two musical \"playmates\": The legendary bassist Bo Stief, who like Riel, belongs to the generation of Danish musicians who started their professional careers at Montmartre in the 60s, and Carsten Dahl, one of Europe's most innovative piano players. The trio plays in balance with themselves and each other, and simply let's the music flow unhindered. So where, then, does the music flow? Basically, this is classic piano-trio jazz, and while Carsten Dahl is \"in charge\", he never overshadows the trio's creative affinity. Quite appropriately, the mood is established with, \"My Song\" a classic Keith Jarrett number. In many ways Riel's playing is discreet, often poetic, so it's fitting that Dahl has dedicated his composition for the album, \"The Poet\" to Alex. Their studio works originally appeared divided onto three different albums. While their 1955 session was issued in it's complete form on the LP Miles Davis All Star Sextet\/Quintet, the results from the famous Miles\/Milt\/Monk encounter were divided onto two different albums, one titled Bags' Groove (containing only the two takes of the title track plus a quintet session with Sonny Rollins recorded on June 29, 1954) and Miles Davis and the Modern Jazz Giants (which had the rest of the music from that session plus a version of \"Round Midnight\" recorded at the same sessions as the music from the celebrated Cookin', Relaxin', Workin'... series with John Coltrane). However, given it's musical and historical importance, the Miles\/Milt\/Monk session would soon be included in it's entirety on a long LP (Prestige PR7650), whose contents and cover have been reproduced here. Having first met in the '70s thanks to their respective close associations with Fela Kuti, the two world-renowned musicians talked for decades about making an album together. When, in 2010, their touring schedules coincided in the UK, the moment presented itself and producer Nick Gold took the opportunity to record their encounter. The unfinished sessions, consisting of all original compositions by the pair, lay in archive until after Masekela passed away in 2018.
