To some, a tenor-to-alto switch may not seem to be a newsworthy matter, but for the initiated it's the stuff of headlines. An inveterate tenor at the apex of the scene for more than three decades, Eric put the alto away in his teen years and never looked back. "But with the dearth of opportunities to play during the pandemic, I started to work on it," he confesses. After successfully pitching the idea of using his second saxophone-with-strings project as a debut on alto, the present recording is quite simply astounding. Eric Alexander's prowess on the tenor saxophone, his unimpeachable virtuosity and technical skill, is obvious to anyone who has paid attention to his fluent and stirring work over the past three decades. His reputation as a hard-blowing jazz gladiator has stood him well with fellow musicians and loyal listeners. Admired and enjoyed for his exceptional powers, Alexander is a model of mainstream jazz expertise. However, on this HighNote recording Eric, backed by three of his favorite colleagues and the lush sounds of a string orchestra, brings his lyrical side to the fore. "I wanted to get straight into the beauty of a song, always putting the melody first, " Alexander states about his expressed intentions for the album. "Improvisations are the icing on the cake." With the fruition of this dream project Alexander has again succeeded in proving that his long obvious gifts as a player are equaled by his respect for the gift of song.

Tracks:
1.1 Gently
1.2 Dreamsville
1.3 Some Other Time
1.4 Lonely Woman
1.5 Slow, Hot Wind
1.6 The Thrill Is Gone
Title: Sunday in New York
Artist: Eric Alexander
Label: Venus
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 4571292514569
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2010-12-21
Number of Discs: 1
Additional Details: JAPAN - IMPORT

Japanese paper sleeve pressing. There are few artists on stage today who combine chops, imagination and technique with a fluidity of ideas as he does. This imposing improviser is reunited here with pianist David Hazeltine and they're joined by another jazz great, the always daring trumpeter Jon Faddis on a couple of the tracks. Add in the swing engendered by bassist John Webber and drummer Joe Farnsworth and you have a formula for excellence, if ever there was one. Alexander produced the session and there is a strong latin feel throughout thanks to the contributions of vibrant percussionist Alex Diaz spurring the band on with a whole trunk load of Latin percussion instruments. Venus. 2015. In addition to being one of the top tenor saxophonists of his generation, Eric Alexander has developed quite a following in Japan, as evidenced by his series of recordings for the Venus label. These 2004 sessions with pianist Mike LeDonne, bassist John Webber, and drummer Joe Farnsworth are much in the mold of John Coltrane's Ballads album of the early '60s. His rich, big-toned tenor is rhapsodic as he explores a number of timeless ballads, though more than a few have pretty much fallen out of favor among jazz musicians in the 21st century. Particularly welcome are his explorations of two gems by the late jazz pianist Mal Waldron, while the leader's "Gently" fits in perfectly with the more established pieces. Earle Hagen's "Harlem Nocturne" is played in two separate versions, the first being a bit laid-back, the latter at a brisk tempo with LeDonne adding an enticing vamp. The bluesy treatment of "Stormy Weather" is strangely credited to Duke Ellington, while Alexander's shimmering take of Billy Strayhorn's gorgeous "Chelsea Bridge" is an obvious highlight.

Tracks:
1.1 Mona Lisa
1.2 I Got It Bad
1.3 Fanny
1.4 I'm a Fool-To Want You
1.5 Lil Darling
1.6 Look of Love
1.7 My Ship
1.8 Who Scan Eye-Turn-To
1.9 Time After Time
Title: Alexander, Eric : Lazy Afternoon Gentle Ballads Iv
Artist: Eric Alexander
Label: Venus
Product Type: SUPER-AUDIO CD
UPC: 4571292516464
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2014-07-29
Number of Discs: 1
Additional Details: JAPAN - IMPORT

2014 Japanese SACD pressing of his 2010 album. Boasting a warm, finely burnished tone and a robust melodic and harmonic imagination, tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander has been exploring new musical worlds from the outset. His new album 'Chicago to New York' pays tribute to the intersection and interplay that still exists between Chicago and New York. Unlike Alexander's 2014 album, Chicago Fire that featured an all-NYC rhythm section, the stellar casting on this new album is split evenly with LeDonne and Alexander representing New York, and the always excellent bassist Dennis Carroll and drummer George Fludas representing Chicago, where this dynamic rhythm section continues to live and work. The record's theme cleverly explores the shared interconnection between two far-flung cities and benefits from a proximity that all four individuals share in terms of musical approach, supreme accomplishment on their instruments, and an adherence to a group aesthetic that prioritizes groove, swing, and the "give-and-take interplay" that is the hallmark of the best jazz. Coupled with thoughtful selection choices by John Coltrane, Matt Dennis, and Mongo Santamaria (among others), the recording's repertoire provides Alexander and company excellent improvisatory vehicles with which to skillfully traverse the nearly 800-miles that separate these two great American jazz cities... enjoy the drive!

Tracks:
1.1 Afro Blue
1.2 Wise One
1.3 This Is Always
1.4 Only the Lonely
1.5 Hittin' the Jug
1.6 Lamp Is Low
1.7 Angel Eyes
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/1033/0151/3561/files/4401730-3322047_bed8dd94-7064-4bef-8317-06e1328a8d39.jpg?v=1788059021
eric-alexander-two-of-a-kind
Eric Alexander: Two of a Kind - COMPACT DISCS
Title: Two of a Kind
Artist: Eric Alexander
Label: Criss Cross
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 8712474113323
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 1997-09-09
Number of Discs: 1

This is Eric Alexander's 4th release as a leader, and is his most cohesive to date.
