Naturally, they were more than well acquainted. Dave and Paul made their debut at the Black Hawk Night Club in San Francisco. Their hallmark: relentless combatting racial barriers, even in the darkest periods of McCarthyism, and making jazz accessible to the widest possible public by revisiting ballads, old favorites and well-known classical themes. But above all, they developed an almost endless variety of complex time signatures. That evening of 24 October 1967 in Scheveningen, the Dave Brubeck Quartet was not a band playing jazz. In 1959, Brubeck defied convention by experimenting with unusual time signatures, inspired by his travels through Eurasia. This resulted in a masterpiece that is both complex and surprisingly accessible. The album introduced the world to the immortal classic 'Take Five', written by saxophonist Paul Desmond. Time Out was the first jazz album to sell over a million copies, proving that adventurous music can reach a wide audience. This album is a milestone in jazz, particularly in the Cool Jazz and West Coast Jazz movements. It's defining characteristic is the groundbreaking use of time signatures such as 5/4 ('Take Five') and 9/8 ('Blue Rondo à la Turk'), which was unique at the time.

Tracks:
1.1 Blue Rondo À La Turk
1.2 Strange Meadow Lark
1.3 Take Five
1.4 Three To Get Ready
1.5 Kathy's Waltz
1.6 Everybody's Jumpin
1.7 Pick Up Sticks
Title: At Carnegie Hall
Artist: Dave Brubeck Quartet
Label: Sony
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 074646145524
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2001-04-10
Number of Discs: 2
Additional Details: REMASTERED

Their legendary 1963 performance! But who can really determine that? For no one - apart from Brubeck himself - would have seen and heard his conservatively estimated 12,000 concerts. Although the twelve titles had already been released on LPs that had been recorded in the studio, these records were certainly not known to all those in the audience. In between the numbers on each LP, Brubeck made little 'advertising spots' in short comments, but with such charm and wit that one really cannot be angry with him.The concert programme begins with "St. Louis Blues" and ends with "Take Five". Luckily, the solos are distributed among all the musicians, so that Paul Desmond and Joe Morello - whose prowess on this evening can only be called 'amazingly good' - justifiably received enthusiastic applause from both the audience and us alike. "Castilian Drums" demonstrates Morello's wealth of ideas and his grandiose feeling for rhythm; though short, Paul Desmond's solos ("Southern Scene" is a good example!) are compelling, highly melodic, lyrical and possess a unique tone - as such they are immediately recognisable. How fortunate that the twelve brilliantly improvised numbers are now available once again on vinyl, having been recorded live at the legendary Carnegie Hall 60 years ago.." Recording: February 1963 Carnegie Hall, New YorkProduction: Teo Macero." "At Carnegie Hall" - Dave Brubeck (p); Paul Desmond (as); Eugene Wright (b); Joe Morello (dr)." gatefold sleeve

Tracks:
1.1 St. Louis Blues
1.2 Bossa Nova U.S.A
1.3 For All We Know
1.4 Pennies from Heaven
1.5 Southern Scene (Briar Bush)
1.6 Three to Get Ready
1.7 Eleven-Four
1.8 King for a Day
1.9 Castilian Drums (Parts I and II)
1.10 It's a Raggy Waltz
1.11 Blue Rondo a la Turk
1.12 Take Five
Title: Time Out - Limited 180-Gram Purple Colored Vinyl with Bonus Tracks
Artist: Dave Brubeck Quartet
Label: Jazz Images
Product Type: VINYL LP
UPC: 8436569196359
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2026-07-17
Number of Discs: 1
Additional Details: SPAIN - IMPORT, LIMITED EDITION, 180 GRAM VINYL, COLORED VINYL, PURPLE, BONUS TRACKS

The complete album + 2 bonus tracks - limited edition pressing on 180g purple coloured vinyl, with album cover image by the late American jazz photographer Bob Willoughby (1927 - 2009). The fact that Time Out became such an enormous success took the world by surprise, including the members of the Dave Brubeck Quartet. By 1959, the group with Paul Desmond had been in existence for a decade and it was highly popular among jazz audiences. Most of the songs were composed by Brubeck, as is the case on the album Time Out. However, one of the catchiest melodies on that album, 'Take Five', was a Paul Desmond composition, and it would become the quartet's most celebrated tune. While they experimented, one way or another, on many of their previous albums, none of them had such an ambitious concept as Time Out, which only presented tunes written in unusual time signatures. It was impossible to predict that such an unusual idea would lead to one of the best-selling jazz albums of all time. "Dave Brubeck's defining masterpiece, Time Out is one of the most rhythmically innovative albums in jazz history, the first to consciously explore time signatures outside of the standard 4/4 beat or 3/4 waltz time. This belongs in even the most rudimentary jazz collection." - * Steve Huey, AllMusic Includes the bonus tracks 'Far More Blue' and 'It's A Raggy Waltz'.

Tracks:
1.1 Blue Rondo a la Turk
1.2 Strange Meadow Lark
1.3 Take Five
1.4 Far More Blue (
1.5 Three to Get Ready
1.6 Kathy's Waltz
1.7 Everybody's Jumpin'
1.8 Pick Up Sticks
1.9 It's a Raggy Waltz
Title: Swiss Radio Days 1964, Vol. 42
Artist: Dave Brubeck Quartet
Label: TCB Montreux Records
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 725095024228
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2024-07-05
Number of Discs: 1

Tracks:
1.1 Audrey
1.2 Cable Car
1.3 You Go to My Head
1.4 Take Five
1.5 Koto Song
1.6 Pennies from Heaven
1.7 Shimwa
1.8 Thank You
Title: Live at Midem 1983
Artist: Dave Brubeck Quartet
Label: Good Time
Product Type: COMPACT DISCS
UPC: 730167321778
Genre: Jazz
Release Date: 2021-09-21
Number of Discs: 1
Additional Details: MANUFACTURED ON DEMAND

Recorded live January 28th, 1983 at the Palais Des Festivals, Cannes, during the MIDEM Jaz Gala - Brubeck invites jazz and blues legends B.B. The first regular Dave Brubeck Quartet with Paul Desmond included Joe Dodge on drums and, alternatively, brothers Bob or Norman Bates on bass. In 1956 Joe Morello took over as the quartet's drummer in place of Dodge (the Bates brothers would be replaced by Eugene Wright on bass a few months after the recording of this album, and with his arrival the "Classic Quartet" was born). Jazz Goes to Junior College is, therefore, a recording that shows a transitional phase of the quartet. It also marks a return to "live" albums after making various studio LPs. This was a "sequel" to the Brubeck Quartet hit Jazz Goes to College, recorded during various college concerts in 1954.
